"John Cantrell was born in North Carolina about 1773, and was called "Johnny Flat," when he later settled in Spartanburg County, South Carolina to distinguish him from other John Cantrells of that date and locality. Married Mary Adkins, who was born in Spartanburg County.
"There has been some different of opinion as to the year that John moved to Tennessee, but there are records in McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee from 1824 to 1855 of grants of land made to him on the north side of Sink Creek.
