Hebe Catherine Templer
(12 May 1817 - 17 Oct 1887)
Named Hebe after her Godmother who was her mother's great friend. Much beloved and respected as daughter sister, wife and mother. Very active and energetic both in mind and body, Lived at Greenwich and Hatcham.
Bought Roxeth Mead, Harrow in 1855 and lived there from 1856
Sold Downe Hall to W Montague about 1860 - CAP
Hebe Catherine was the daughter of James Templer and married John Venn Prior in Bridport, Dorset in 1838. Her husband, a barrister, died after falling from his horse and hitting his head, leaving his wife with ten children. Hebe started a private school at Roxeth Mead on Harrow-on-the-Hill. Four of her daughters became teachers at the school, and took over the running when Hebe retired. The last daughter, Florence Mary, retired from the school in 1932. Hebe and her four teacher daughters, all spinsters, are buried in the same grave.
The school still exists (2017) at Harrow.
