James Fones Wells b: 11 Mar 1814 (family bible states 12 Mar 1816) in New York. He married Sarah Holmes in Monroeville, Huron Co., Ohio on 13 Feb 1844. He was a stage coach driver between Norwalk and Pennsylvania. He deserted Sarah and after Sarah divorced him in 1850, he married Widow Mary Catherine (Waters) Cobaugh (daughter of Godfrey and Catherine Waters). They had 4 daughters: Jane b: 2 Apr 1856, Persis Earle b: 16 Nov 1857 (named after her paternal grandmother), Anna Marie b: 27 Sep 1859 and Margaret b: Aug 1861. All were born in Jefferson Co., PA although no birth or baptism records have been found to date.
James relocated the family and his wife's parents to Niles, Chickasaw Co., Iowa in 1874-1875 timeframe where the girls all married. Jane married David Loman McManigle 1871, Persis Earle married Miles E Redick 30 Jan 1892, Anna Maria married Heinrich Wilhelm Hillmer 12 Sep 1879, and Margaret married John J O'Dowd in 1885.
