WELLS, JAMES, Private to Corporal, was 'drafted' at Hamilton, Madison Co., NY to serve in the War of 1812 under Captain Jehiel FELT and Colonel George W FLEMING's NY Militia for a period of 3-1/2 months. This data was located from two application for bounty lands while he was living in Huron Co., Ohio in 1850 and 1865. Service was substaniated by the "Commission of Pensions, Department of Interior" and land granted to him. The service in the 11th US Infantry/Cavarly has been proven to another James Wells who was born in Keene, NH and died in Sidney, OH.
James deserted his wife from about 1850 until his death on 3 Jul 1870. Based on the land applications, he stayed in the area during this time period. His wife, Persis was listed as a widow on the 1850 & 1860 census. He is buried next to his wife. Plot: Section 3 East - Central Section - Row 2.
