Sir Henry Sutton Dudley
(1517 - 1568)
Henry Sutton Dudley (1517–1568), also known as Henry Dudley, was an English soldier, sailor, diplomat, and conspirator of the Tudor period. Born in Dudley Castle, Staffordshire, Henry Dudley was the second son of John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley, and the younger brother of Edward Sutton, 4th Baron Dudley. His mother was Cicely, the daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquis of Dorset. Dudley was the first cousin of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk, the father of Lady Jane Grey, and the second cousin once removed of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. He is not to be confused with the youngest of Northumberland's sons, also named Henry Dudley, who married Margaret, the daughter of Lord Chancellor Thomas Audley.
Sir Henry was named by his grandmother, Cecily, Marchioness of Dorset, in her will, dated 6 May 1527. He was a monastic auditor under Cromwell in 1535, and a soldier in Ireland in 1536 under his uncle Leonard Grey. He was a soldier in Scotland, say 1540-3. He fought valiantly at the siege of Boulogne in 1544, and was Captain from early 1545 when Edward Fiennes, Lord Clinton, was Chief Captain. He was Vice Admiral of the Narrow Seas 1552-3 when Edward Fiennes was Admiral. He was knighted at Hampton Court on 11 Oct 1551.He was a close associate of his second cousin, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and was arrested on 25 July 1553 for complicity (with among others his father-in-law) in the rebellion of Robert's father, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland.Henry Dudley was jailed in the Tower of London, and received a pardon from Queen Mary on 18 Oct 1553. He was exiled in French service 1556-1563, but was in English service as "Capt. Dudley" in 1563, receiving an annuity later the same year from Queen Elizabeth "for his service". In 1567 he obtained from the Queen a year's protection from his creditors (renewed for two years in 1568). Sir Henry Dudley died between 1568 and 1570. No will, administration of estate, of Inq.p.m. has been discovered.Children of Henry Dudley Sutton and Ashton are: Roger Dudley, b. 1532, North Hampton, England, d. 14 March 1587/88, North Hamptonshire, England.

A close associate of his second cousin, the Duke of Northumberland, he was arrested on 25 July 1553 at Calais. The duke had sent him to France around 13 July 1553 to confer with King Henry II regarding French support in the event of an Imperial intervention in England. Dudley was imprisoned in the Tower of London, but pardoned by Queen Mary on 18 October 1553.
It's possible that Henry, rather than John, is the true father of Thomas Dudley. Wikipedia seems to support this theory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Sutton_Dudley
Dudley is often referred to vaguely as a "cousin" of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. Henry Dudley was in fact the second son of John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley, and the younger brother of Edward Sutton, 4th Baron Dudley. His mother was Cicely, the daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquis of Dorset, and was to continue the private struggle of his family against Tudor dynasty through into the reign of Mary I of England.
Born in Dudley Castle, Staffordshire, this lord Henry Dudley is not to be confused with that son of Northumberland named Henry Dudley who was born between 1522-1542 and who married Margaret, the daughter of Thomas Audley.
Henry became a monastic auditor under Thomas Cromwell in 1535, and then a soldier serving in Ireland under his uncle Leonard Grey in 1536, and in Scotland from 1540-3. Dudley fought gallantly during the siege of Boulogne in 1544, and was made a Captain early in 1545 under Lord Clinton.
It was about 1535/45, Probably at Boulogne that he married the daughter of Christopher Ashton, (b 1493) who was born about 1519 and who bore him a son, Roger Dudley.
He was promoted to Vice Admiral of the Narrow Seas 1552-3 when Edward Fiennes was Admiral, and knighted at Hampton Court on the 11th October 1551.
A close associate of his second cousin, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, he was arrested on 25 July 1553 for his complicity in the political maneuverings of the Duke of Northumberland. Henry was imprisoned in the Tower of London, but pardoned by Queen Mary on 18 October, 1553.

Dudley was born in London, England, and may have been baptised in Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire. Dudley's parentage has never been satisfactorily established. Genealogist and researcher Marshall Kirk in 1993 published the results of his exhaustive survey of the Sutton Dudley families, and came to the conclusion that Roger was the son of Henry Sutton Dudley.
