Sir John Sutton Dudley

John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley, commonly known as Lord Quondam, was the eldest son and heir of Sir Edward Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley and his wife Lady Cecily (Willoughby) Sutton, a descendant of Edward III of England.
He was born about 1494, at Dudley Castle, Worcestershire. He was betrothed to Lady Cecily Grey, a daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset.
He was knighted October 13, 1513. He succeeded his father Edward Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley as Baron Dudley in 1532 and immediately began to sell his patrimony, including half of Powis Castle. He was never summoned to Parliament.
He acquired the nickname, "Lord Quondam" ("Lord Formerly"), when he allowed his estate, including the castle of Dudley, to fall into the possession of his cousin, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. The Duke resided at Dudley Castle and added new and magnificent structures to the old fortress. After the Duke of Northumberland's execution, Dudley Castle was forfeited to the crown, but in 1555 was restored to Lord Quondam's eldest son, Edward Sutton, 4th Baron Dudley.
John Sutton had several siblings including:
- Eleanor, she married firstly, Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester, and secondly, Leonard Grey, 1st Viscount Grane.
- Margaret, she married John Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Powis, and was the mother of Edward Grey, 3rd Baron Grey of Powis.
- Jane, she was the mother of Thomas Fiennes, 9th Baron Dacre, who was executed for murder in 1541.
- Joyce, she married John Leighton of Watlesburgh and their son, Thomas Leighton (Sir Governor of Jersey) married Elizabeth Knollys, daughter of Catherine, Lady Knollys and sister of Lettice Knollys Dudley, Countess of Leicester.
- Elizabeth, she married Thomas Butler, a son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond.
After leaving Dudley Castle, Lord Dudley decided upon a city residence at Tothill Street in Westminster.
His children included:
- Sir Edward Sutton Dudley, m1. Jane Stanley, daughter of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby; m2. Catherine Brydges, daughter of John Brydges, Lord Chandos; m3. Mary Howard, daughter of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham.
- Captain Henry Sutton Dudley, m. Elizabeth Ashton in 1545, daughter of Christopher Ashton and step daughter of Catherine Gordon of Scotland. Catherine Gordon was often referred to as the "White Rose of Scotland".
Less is known about his other children whose names are George, Margaret, Thomas, Dorothy, Elizabeth, and Robert.
He died in Westminster and was buried Sep. 18, 1553 in St Margaret's, Westminster, London; his wife was buried there on Apr. 28, 1554.
