Roger Dudley

(1532 - 14 Mar 1587)

Captain Rodger Dudley ( 1535-1586 ) was born in London, England, and may have been baptised in Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire. Dudley's parentage has never been satisfactorily established. Genealogist and researcher Marshall Kirk in 1993 published the results of his exhaustive survey of the Sutton Dudley families, and came to the conclusion that Roger was the son of Henry Sutton Dudley.
In 1586 Rev. Cotton Mather of Boston wrote that "Thomas Dudley's father was Capt. Roger Dudley, who was slain in the wars, when this, his son, and one only daughter were very young". The will of Thomas Dorne of Yardley Hastings, Gent., dated 29 Oct 1588, bequeathed "to the children of Susan Dudley, my Daughter, widow, £10 to be equally divided". Cotton Mather also stated that Thomas Dudley was aided in obtaining his education by Mrs. Purefoy (sister-in-law of John Purefoy) "a gentlewoman famed in the parts about Northampton for wisdom, piety and works of charity". Note: Marshall K. Kirk suggests that Roger made his home after his father's death with Peter Grey, "Queen's servant", whose manor of Segenhoe was two miles from Lidlington, Co. Bedford, where Roger was later married. Any relationship of Peter with Roger's presumed grandmother Cecily Grey has not been established.
Genealogical researcher George Adlard concludes that Gov. Thomas Dudley was not descended in the direct line from John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, yet both were descended from the same ancestry.

Roger Dudley's parents shall always lay in the realm of uncertainty. There are those who believe Roger Dudley's parents were John Dudley and Elizabeth Clerke, as shown here. But there are others who believe his parents were Henry Dudley and Elizabeth Ashton, first cousin to John.
