Joseph Tyson Styer Sr.
(20 Mar 1798 - 27 Oct 1864)
Moved to Ohio from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in approximately 1824. He was the son of Leonard Styer and Mary Tyson. According to different sources he first settled in Erie Co., OH and then came south to Delaware Co. According to another source he first came to Fairfield Co. and then later moved to Delaware Co. Yet another source states they settled in Bucyrus, Ohio, which is in Crawford County. The sources are from two obituaries of Joseph's children and the Spare Family book. His tombstone looks like a small Washington monument and still stands in Sunbury Cemetery in Sunbury, OH. His wife, Rachel Kidney, is etched in one side of the stone. Their daughters names, Esther, Eliza, Mary Jane, and Catherine are etched in another side. George, their son was wounded at Vicksburg, MS and died in the military hospital in St. Louis, MO during the Civil War, is buried there as well. His name is etched on another side of the stone. Joseph's middle name, Tyson, was his mother's maiden name.
