Alexander Boteler was born circa 1766 in present Washington County, Md., the son of Henry and Sarah Boteler, and died in Morgan County,Alabama, by 13 March 1841. He married by Frederick County license dated 9 January 1792 Elizabeth (Hackney) Philpott. Elizabeth had married first circa 1788 Benjamin Philpott, who died by 22 July 1790,the date of his inventory. Benjamin and Elizabeth had a son Horatio Philpott, who was raised by Alexander. In Washington County on 27 March 1795, Alexander bought from Rudolph Brown for 12 shillings, 23/4 acres of King Cole, and on 29 April 1796, the day his father was giving land for the meagre consideration of 5 shillings to his other children, he sold to Alexander for 450 shillings, 149 acres of Boteler's Ramble. Alexander had a sawmill by 14 April 1804, when his brother Henry Boteler, Jr., appeared at the October term of the Chancery Court and testified that on 29 August last he had attended the sale of Sample's Manor in Sharpsburg, from which Mathias Rhodes had hauled logs to Alexander Boteler's sawmill four days earlier. On 20 April 1804 Alexander bought from Alexander Grim 95 acres of the Resurvey on Grim's Delight adjoining Fielderia Manor, and on the same day sold to Henry Burkett of Frederick County 22 acres of the tract, apparently the part that lay in Frederick County. On the same day he bought from his brother Edward 9 1/4 acres of Thomas' Forest, paying$220. On 29 June 1811 he sold to his brother Edward for $285, 219 acres of King Cole; also part of Boteler's Ramble to George Knode for$155; also 33 3/4 acres of the same tract to Abraham Yorty for$322.61, another parcel of 54 acres of the tract for $1625.81, and 53/4 acres of the tract to George Brown for $390. His wife Elizabeth released dower on these conveyances. On 22 March 1806, an notice appeared in the Frederick Town Herald advertising that Alexander was selling 250 acres located on the road from Harpers Ferry to Hagerstown (which today would be Locust Valley and Trego Mountain Roads; see map WMG 10:146) and several male negroes. Alexander and family appeared in the 1810 census with three males under the age of 10, two males 16-26,two females under 10, two females 10-16, his wife age 26-45, and himself age 45 or over, and six slaves. By 23 October 1811 they were in Lincoln County, Tennessee, where Alexander bought from Peter Kuykindall for $570, 191 1/4 acres on the south side of the Elk River, part of a 2500 acre tract granted by the State of Tennessee to John Beard. On 24 November 1814 he sold to Horatio Philpot, his stepson, a 200 acre tract on McCullough's Creek, the acquisition of this tract not recorded. On 6 February 1815 he bought additional land along the Elk River from James Bright and six days later 707 acres on the Elk River from Robert Edmonson (sometimes spelled Edmiston). On 8 February 1825, he sold land to his son Benjamin and transferred by deed of gift to his children, as follows: the original 200 acres to son Benjamin Boteler, 312 acres to daughter Elizabeth Ann Edmonson, and 200 acres to Daughter Eliza McElderry. Alexander was in Morgan County, Alabama,by 1822 when his daughter Eliza was married. He died there by 13 Mary 1841, when the Orphans Court reported that his wife had relinquished her right of administration and recommended sons Benjamin and Alexander, who were bonded for $20,000. The Hon H. Philpott, Judge, ordered that dower be laid off to Elizabeth. Alexander's heirs were:Benjamin, Alexander, Mary Crabb, the heirs of Elizabeth Edmonson, and the heirs of Eliza McElderry. William Edmonson was appointed guardian to Elizabeth's minor children and James B Grahan to Eliza's minor children. On 9 December 1846, a case was brought before the Orphans Court to sell the land of Alexander Boteler; Alexander Boteler Jr.,the surviving administrator, v. the deceased heirs. The land mentioned was the 500 acre plantation where Alexander last lived before his death, adjoining son Alexander and John Troup, and on the north by the Tennessee River. Of his heirs, Mary Crabb and the Edmonsons were of Tennessee. On 2 August 1842, Alexander's wife Elizabeth made her willin Morgan County, in which document she devised all the property, both real and personal that came to her from her husband's estate, to her(then surviving) children, Benjamin, Mary Crabb, and Alexander Boteler. She excepted four negroes, which she bequeathed to her daughter-in-law Harriet Philpot (wife of Elizabeth's son Horatio Philpott). Elizabeth died by 29 November 1847, the date the will was proved by witnesses Aaron Perry and William E Murphy. The administrator d.b.n., Benjamin Boteler (as Alexander Jr., had died)reported on 10 April 1854 that $9706.25 was available for distribution.
