George Marcus Alden

(4 Nov 1828 - 12 Jul 1905)

Colonel George Marcus Alden was born in Newberry, South Carolina, the eldest child of Royal & Melinda Alden. He and his two brothers, Andrew Jackson & Warren Franklin Alden published the newspaper, The Hamilton Sucker, in McLeansboro, Illinois prior to the Civil War. During the Civil War he organized and served as the Captain of Company G in the 13th Illinois Cavalry, was later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and mustered out as a full Colonel. After the war, he became a successful commission merchant in McLeansboro and Cairo Illinois for many years. He later moved with his wife and family to Lancaster, Texas. He married Anna (Nannie) Thomas Graves and they had two sons: Leon L. Alden & Wilber Alden. George Marcus Alden is on the right in the Civil War photograph standing next to his younger brother, Andrew Jackson Alden. Col. George M. Alden was a lineal descendant of the Mayflower pilgrim, John Alden.
