Billy Norman Buckelew, 86, of Laurel, passed away on June 9th, 2012 at Covington County Hospital in Collins, MS. He was a resident of the MS State Veterans Home in Collins for the past two years. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, June 10th 2012 at 3:00pm at Indian Springs Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Indian Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The Reverends Tommy Brill, Mike West and Ryan Smith will officiate.
He was born on March 22, 1926. He is survived by 2 daughters: Judy Buckelew Parker, children: Karen & Benny Hubbard of Magee, and Brenda & Richard Baswell of Anniston, AL; Debra Buckelew Holifield , children: Kelly and Ryan Smith of Laurel, and Amy and Nick Boulware of Lucedale. He had 8 great grandchildren; Jessica and Ethan Brewer, Kaitlyn, Madison, & Ricky Baswell, Emily and Marley Smith and Kara Boulware.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Fayola Hathorn Buckelew, his parents F.W. and Effie Buckelew, 3 brothers, Harmon, R.T. and Frank Buckelew, 3 sisters, May Buckelew Parker, Mary Buckelew Holifield & Mildred Buckelew Parker; son in law, Terry L. Parker. He had a host of nieces and nephews.
Billy was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked for Smith Bakery in Laurel for over 18 years, for Alameda Coffee for 12 years, where he sold restaurant coffee all over MS, AL, and LA. He retired from Little Debbie Cookie Company at the age of 62 due to health reasons. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church for over 40 years where he was an ordained deacon and served on many committees. He was also a member of the American Legion for many years. He and his wife moved to the Indian Springs community and were members of Indian Springs Baptist Church for several years.
Serving as pallbearers will be Benny Hubbard, Major Richard Baswell, Reverend Ryan Smith, Nick Boulware, Allen Jones, and Billy Carol Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be G.B. Ishee, Jay Smith, Morris, Freddie, and Roger Welch, Harvey Phillips and Jerry Parker.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 1:00pm -3:00pm at the church.
