Born the son of Ellie G. Allen (1871 – 1895) and Emma Annie Thompson Lee (1876 – 1959), his father died the year of his birth and his mother remarried the Rev. Robert Edward Lee Bell (1864 – 1946) in Rockwall Co., Texas in 1897. They later moved to Upshur Co., Texas and he was brought up in the Bell home with his 8 half-brothers and sisters. He went by the Bell last name for some time as a youth. He married Iva Lee Smith born about 1899 and their children were Annie Marie Allen (1918 – 2004), Thurman Leon Allen born 1919, Emma Doris Allen born 1921, and Harold Evon Allen born 1924.
