He owned & operated the store at Grice until it closed. Then later he owned & operated H E Allen Grocery on Titus Street in Gilmer, Texas.
He donated a lot of his free time to promote singings in the Gilmer Nursing homes. Shy sang bass with the Grady Lansdale Quartet. He also headed the Upshur County Singing Conventions for a number of years.
