John Harrison Howard

John Howard, eldest son of Nehemial Howard and the former Miss Edith Smith, was born on the 4th day of October 1761 in the Ninety-Six District (later Union County) South Carolina. He was the second of fourteen children.
During the American Revolution, John Howard enlisted as a Private under Capt. John Putnam in the South Carolina Militia. John Howard rose to Major by the end of the war; after serving with Gen. Thomas Sumter and Gen. Frances Marion.
In 1787, John Married Jane Vivian, daughter of Thacker Smith Vivian (1745 – 1801) and the former Mary Brock of Jefferson County, Georgia. This union had nine known children. In 1805, John Howard received land in Baldwin County, Georgia through the Georgia Land Lottery and moved his family to Milledgeville.
Here he lived out his days in prosperity and comfort surrounded by his family.
