WILDWOOD
"Wildwood" which has remained in the same family for over one hundred years. It was built in 1831 for Mrs. Jane Vivian Howard, widow of John Howard, a Revolutionary soldier of Milledgeville, who died April 13, 1822. Mrs. Howard came to Columbus with a large family of grown sons and daughters and a considerable fortune soon after the lands were opened up. It was said she moved here to be near her son-in-law, Seaborn Jones, who had previously married Mary Howard. Her youngest daughter, Sarah Howard, married Matthew R. Evans, and these were the parents of Augusta Jane Evans the author of "St. Elmo" and other best sellers of her day. Augusta Evans was born at "Wildwood" in 1835, in the present dining-room of the house. (Columbus on the Chattahoochee, Etta Blanchard Worsley)
