Sandy Creek news May 06, 1909 Obituary
John Ivory, aged 67 years, died at the St. Lawrence State hospital at Ogdensburg, Monday night, April 26, at 8:30, after but a few hours sickness, with gastro internis. The funeral was held from the late home on North Park street, Adams with burial at Smithville. Mr. Ivory is survived by his widow and one son, O. C. Ivory, who resides in Adams, and by a sister, Mrs [Emeline] Wilder of Smithville and three brothers, Theodore and Harrison of Smithville, and Dewitt of Adams Center. Mr Ivory had been a life long resident of Adams up to about a year ago, when it was noticed that he was becoming irrational and one day while alone he went to the river and threw himself in. Owing to the water being shallow at that place, he was soon rescued and was taken to his home and a strict watch kept over him. Later he procured a razor and tried to cut his throat, but was prevented from so doing by his wife who happened in the room just as he was about to use the razor. At this time the relatives thought it best to have him examined as to his sanity, and a council of doctors was called, who pronounced Mr. Ivory unsafe to be at large; that he was so violent that he might at any time inflict injuries on others as well as himself. He was accordingly taken to Ogdensburg for treatment, where it was thought he was improving and that he would soon be able to leave the hospital, when the message came that he was very ill. Mr Ivory was a veteran horseman, having owned and raised some of the fastest horses in this part of the state. He was known by every race-goer for miles around, having attended most of the race meets and fairs for the past 30 years.
John W. Ivory was 66 years old when he died.
