Individual Details

Leonard Joseph Haines Wilson

(1 Nov 1908 - 14 Oct 1965)

Leonard came to Kansas City and worked for Herbert M. Woolf as his stable manager. The Wilson boys had grown up working with horses on the ranges of Iowa and South Dakota. Mr. Woolf wanted to breed race horses. Leonard would have foaled them, and cared and trained them. Mr. Woolf raised the first non-Kentucky bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby. "Lawrin", trained on the track by Ben Jones and ridden by Eddie Arcaro (his first win). That is the Wilson connection to the Kentucky Derby. Other brothers worked at Aksarben track in Omaha, Nebraska, as exercise jockeys.
