Individual Details
James Jamison
(28 Feb 1813 - 2 Feb 1892)
My father, James Jamison, I remember told several of his children, including myself, that he ran away from home in Ireland at the age of 17 years. He landed at Quebec, Canada, was an iron worker and got a good job. Three years later he sailed to New Orleans, joined Bill Terry’s group of men and rode to California on horseback in the gold rush of 1849.
He told us many amusing incidents about this trip. He was fairly successful in gold mining after which he sailed to Panama. He walked across Panama Isthmus (there was no canal then, of course) then sailed to Galveston. In 1852 he was living on land in Oyster Creek in Brazoria County.
Shortly after building a good two-story house he sent the money for passage to America to two of his brothers, Thomas and William, and one sister, Sarah Jamison.
He helped these relations get located on some land and assisted them in improving same. I’m sure you are familiar with the locations where they settled. This is all I know for sure.

Burial
Gravestone shared with wife Mary Webber. This is the original tombstone moved to this location upon the death of his wife.
Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep,
From which none ever wake to weep.
Calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
Asleep in Jesus, peaceful rest,
Whose waking is supremely blest.
No fear no woe shall dim that hour,
That manifests the Saviour's power.
Asleep in Jesus, oh for me,
May such a blissful refuge be.
Securely may my ashes lie,
Waiting the summons from on high.
