Samuel Jamison

(1780 - 9 Apr 1871)

Recent discoveries about our Jamison ancestors in Northern Ireland were made by a contact, Jenny Hall, who traveled there. Jenny had asked me for information about them, and I shared numerous letters that other relatives had shared with me as well as a family tree hand-drawn in December 1990 by Mary Beth Rucks Coleman based on old letters, bibles and legal records researched in the 1960s. All that material is now online at: https://www.forever.com/app/users/jennifer-hall/albums/jamison-family/eyo4m74ys9fu8edngmcvgx63w
In Northern Ireland, Jenny found two Jamison headstones in a family plot at the Coagh Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cookstown, County Tyrone. One has the following inscription: In Memory of Sarah Jamison, who died in 1848, aged 65 years. Her grandson Thomas Jamison, who died in 1863, aged 3 years. Her husband Samuel Jamison, who died in 1869, aged 84 years. Also step-son Joseph Jamison, who died in 1892, aged 78 years and his wife Eliza Jamison who died in 1895, aged 83 years.

The other headstone has this inscription:
In memory of Samuel Jamison
A servant of Jesus Christ
Born at Aughavey, 1857
Born again 1870
Departed to be with Christ 30th Nov. 1897
Reader, have you been born of the Spirit
John 3,5
He that believeth on the Son
hath everlasting life,
and he that believeth not the Son
shall not see life
but the wrath of God abideth on him.
John 3, 36

This Samuel Jamison must be the elder son of the Joseph and Eliza Jamison who are named on the first headstone. He apparently was never married.

After Jenny sent me this information, replied to her:
What a wonderful discovery you have made! Thank you for sharing it with me.
The Coagh Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, is on Find-a-Grave. The Jamison graves were not listed, so I have added them to the website. The marker with the names of Sarah, Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, and Eliza Jamison must be of the same people who we have in the family tree. The dates on the tombstone are slightly different from those that are in the hand-drawn family tree that was made by Mary Beth Rucks Coleman in 1990.
I assume that the dates on the tombstone are likely to be more accurate, with one notable exception: There is evidence that Samuel Jamison died in 1871 at the age of 91, not 1869 at the age of 84, if the record is of the same Samuel Jamison. See:
"Ireland Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958" https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FRTC-3WT

The biggest surprise is that Joseph Millington Jamison was a step-son of Sarah McComb Jamison (if McComb was her maiden name). This means that Sarah was not the first wife of Samuel Jamison, not the mother of his older children, and not my ancestor. Who was Samuel Jamison’s first wife?
There is a gap of several years between the births of Samuel’s fourth child, Joseph Millington Jamison (1814-1817 depending on which source you believe), and his fifth child, Thomas J. Jamison (1824). Thus, Sarah McComb Jamison may be the mother of Thomas and his two younger sisters, Sarah Ann and Elizabeth.
All the other Jamison children emigrated to America, but the youngest daughter, Elizabeth Jamison, remained in Northern Ireland and married Walter Young. They had five children: Sarah Jane, Robert, Mary, Hannah, and Margaret. There are markers visible in the background your photos of people named Young. These are our relatives too. Did you photograph those headstones?
