Herbert Henry "Burt" Stafford

(30 Aug 1871 - 5 Jun 1952)

His father died 26 Sept 1883 when he was nearly 12. He remembered growing up on farm with a sod house (a search of homestead records did not show them around Wilber). Wilber school records starting 1877 show the 3 Stafford boys attending school in Wilber; his mother is listed as a teacher in 1878. They purchased their first lot in the town of Wilber in 1877 (lot 390 bought June 2, 1877; lot 389 on Jan 1 1878 & 391 Oct 16 1881), all under the name of Caroline Stafford. In his early years Burt was a blacksmith and amateur boxer. He worked for a Wilber dentist who encouraged him to study. All Three lots were sold December 1896, and Burt was listed as owner. His brothers (and step brother) had left the Wilber home by then; Fred married in 1888 and moved to O'Neill, George married and a son was born in Wilber and they moved to Oregon in 1894. In 1896 he and his mother moved to Keokuk where he enrolled in Keokuk Dental College, graduating in 1900. He became a staff member of the college (and conducted a private practice as well) until 1908 when the Dental college was sold to Drake University. The college was later moved to Iowa City where it became the Univ. of Iowa College of Dentistry. These early graduates were granted Alumni status. His entire career in dentistry, which spanned over fifty years, was spent in the same locality.
