Phoebe Lucia Rau

Phoebe L. Rau was born just two miles north of Donnellson (Franklin Twp). Both parents spoke German at home, and she did not learn English until she started public school. Her parents (Jacob Rau & Elizabeth Holdefer) moved to Keokuk when she was very young (about 1881), and Jacob purchased a saloon on Main St. (between 8th & 9th on the west side - see photo). Phoebe taught in elementary school in Keokuk for several years - until she had her first child (Herbert Henry Stafford Jr.).
I (Roger, here grandson) recall that she always had a few cookies in her jar when we came for dinner on Sunday (1406 Timea St, Keokuk, IA).
