Konstantinos Georgios Tsapoitis
(1870 - )
Email from Thomas (Makis) Kontakos to Carol Kostakos Petranek, May 17, 2023:
the name Tsapoitis was taken from a village in Arcadia (near Megalopolis) named Tsapoga or Tsiapoga. The family moved to Magoula. My maternal grandfather Konstantinos (son of Grorge) was born in Magoula but moved to Agios Ioannis where he had two marriages and children from both. Other Magoula born Tsapoitis children had families in Magoula and Kladas. It is very difficult to follow them in Canada and New York and Greece.
This is Thomas (Makis) Kontakos' maternal grandfather. He wrote this on an Agios Ioannis Facebook group post on November 7, 2020:
It appears that, the Ellis island records indicate the arrival of my maternal grandfather there on April 17, 1905. I never heard about this from any of my relatives. Someone, from the Agios Ioannis or Magoula families: Vasilakos or Vasilacos or Vassilakos (Βασιλάκος), Marcopoulos or Markopoulos (Μαρκόπουλος) may have some information.
The info I have is based on what I have heard from my late mother and the Sparta Marriages records in myHeritage.
The photo (the only one I have) is of my maternal grand father Konstantinos Tsapoitis (Τσαποίτης), father's name George, born at Magoula (circa 1870). He lived in Agios Ioannis and had two marriages there (registered with the Greek Orthodox church):
Marriage Α (1892); bride: Eleni Vasilakos (Βασιλάκου), from Agios Ioannis, father's name George. They had 4 children which later immigrated to USA (3) and Canada.
Marriage Β (1910); bride Zacharo Petrakos (Πετράκου), from Elos, father's name Nikolaos. They had 5 children; my mother Pota or Panagiota included.
His first born son George Tsapoitis, immigrated to the USA at the age of 17, single status; arrival date at Ellis Island April 5th 1914, about 4 years after his father's second marriage. He was going to his uncle in New York Michael Vassilakos (his mother's brother). His mother Eleni is shown as the relative at Agios Ioannis and not his father implying a divorce and (perhaps) not good relations with father.
Tsapoitis G. Constantin. According to Ellis Island records, this 35 year old person arrived at Ellis Island on April 17th 1905, married, from Agios Ioannis, born circa 1870. He travelled from Harve on board La Gascogne. The ship manifest does not give a lot of info as those of later years. However, it is reported that this person had been to USA before (1902 - 1903) and he was going to his brother in law James Marcopoulos (32 Sands Street, Brooklyn). Furthermore, he was travelling with a single, 18 year old lady Evanthia N. Marcopoulos from Agios Ioannis going to her brothers James and Meletis Marcopoulos in Brooklyn.
Is Tsapoitis G. Constantin my maternal grand father? I never heard of multiple trips to USA or related to the Marcopoulos family of Agios Ioannis. I knew very little about my grand father. I suspect that he passed away before my birth (1945) or soon after. I do not have any memories of him; I do remember my grand mother (Zacharo, his second wife) very well.
I will appreciate your help. I tend to believe it is the same person; the name, age, place of origin, travels to USA before the second marriage and "escape" of children (from the first marriage) to USA point me to this conclusion. I just need a confirmation. Perhaps, it was a bad divorce and many wanted to forget.
