"Lewis Alexander Hughes was born August 24, 1911, on his dad'shomestead on Leonard Creek, the second of five children of Emily(Mackal) and Thomas S. Hughes. He attended the Meadow Creek andMcAllister schools through the eighth grade. .......
Lewis attended high school in Ennis, Whitehall, and Bellingham,Washington, graduating in 1932. He found it impossible to stay awayfrom the madison for long and returned home to help his father on theranch near McAllister. ............
Midge and Lewis were married October 7, 1936, then on to Fort Peckwhere Lewis had employment. They lived in a little tar paper shack atMcCone City, one of the satellite towns that had sprung up around thedam site. On New Year's Eve of that same year, Lewis claims that hemade the longest jump known to man - 200 feet down Number Threecontrol shaft when a cable broke - and lived to tell about it. Afterover two months in hospitals in Fort Peck and Glassgow, he and Midgereturned to the Madison.
In 1949 Lewis and Midge took over the old Schoenberger ranch, threemiles west of McAllister, near the foot of the Tobacco RootMountains.............
Larry Allen Hughes was born July 23, 1940 and has spent all his lifein the Madison. On October 17, Larry and Claudette Breshears weremarried and are partners of Lewis and Midge on the ranch. They havepresented Midge and Lewis with two grandchildren, Creyton Allen,December 5, 1968 and Trace Renee, Octobe 21, 1972..................."Submitted by Midge and Lewis Hughes.
