Edwin A. HUGHES

"Edwin Hughes was born October 23 1909 to Tom and Emily (Mackel)Hughes at the Bill Else house in McAllister. He was the oldest of fivechildren. The other children in the family were: Lewis, Marjorie,Robert, and Tom.
Edwin remembers when the road from McAllister to Ennis was two tracksin the sage brush with an alternate route to the Gordon ranch and thento Ennis. He walked to school at District 13, which was a mile fromhome but drove a horse, when he attended school in District 48, whichwas somewhat farther away.
In 1919, the Hughes family moved to a new undeveloped ranch one milesouth of McAllister. He finished the eighth grade in District 48, andattended high school in Ennis for two years, then transferred toWhitehall graduating in 1928.
Soon after finishing high school, Edwin went to work in the Buttemines. He met his future wife, Margaret Howells, in that city.
When the 1929 crash came, all single men were laid off, so he wentback to the Madison where he farmed with his father. In 1930, he wentto work for the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries.
On September 5, 1931, Edwin and Margaret were married in Butte,Montana. Edwin was 21, and Margaret was 19. At that age, she wasmanager of the Metro Golden Mayer Movie Company, Butte offfice. Shehad graduated from Butte High School in 1930.
Edwin and Margaret had two sons, Lee, born July 6, 1922, and David,born on Edwin's birthday, October 23, 1936.
After mining, for a short time, Edwin and Margaret ranched from 1938to 1957, when they sold the ranch and he worked for Owenhouse Hardwarefor five years,, then for Kaiser Cement for 13 years. They now spendtheir summers in Montana and winters in Black Canyon City, Arizona."Submitted by Edwin Hughes.
