Larry Allen Hughes, 66, of McAllister died at home Tuesday morning,Aug. 22, 2006.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday, Aug.26, at 11 a.m., from the Meadow Creek Cemetery at McAllister.
Larry was born July 23, 1940, in Bozeman to Lewis and Mildred SproutHughes. He graduated from Ennis High School in 1958 and continued hiseducation at Montana State College. Larry then enlisted in the 82ndAirborne Paratroopers and served for two years. He returned home andin 1964 married Claudette Breshears.
A third generation rancher, he and Claudette ranched together for thenext 43 years and raised their two children, Creyton and Tracy. For 28of those years, being an old-fashioned cowboy, he ramrodded thesix-day cattle drives to the Maverick Basin Allotment in theGravelies.
Larry loved to rope, ride, and work his cattle. His first job wasrange riding with Jim Wilson on South Meadow Creek at the age of 8.
Larry was an avid fan of his children's sporting activities, as heliked competition. He bowled, golfed, pitched horseshoes, team-ropedand was unbeatable at playing cards. He left his family with thelegacy of the card game called "Solo." His knack for telling talltales and giving advice along with his clever witticism were legendaryto all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, ThereseJenkins.
He is survived by his wife, Claudette; son, Creyton (Michelle) Hughes,and daughter, Tracy (Daron) Kamerman; grandchildren, Austin Hughes andDelaney Kamerman; sisters-in-law, Rochelle (Frank) Kriewald, Claudia(Dave) Sorvig; brother-in-law, Morrie (Susan) Holmes; numerous aunts,uncles, nephews, cousins and friends.
Memorials: Madison Valley Hospital Building Fund.
