Alva was born the son of Alva and Edith Gregson Vincent on February 1, 1926, in Montezuma, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Searsboro and graduated with the Searsboro High School Class of 1943.
He served his country in the Navy as a Painter Third Class during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 18, 1946, at the United States Navy Personnel Separation Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He was married to Pauline Tish on December 20, 1947, in Marshalltown, Iowa. To this union six children were born, Cary, Kevin, Denisa, Serita, Madolyn, and Venisa. The couple resided in Searsboro and Alva was employed at Miracle Playground Equipment in Grinnell as a graphic designer. In 1969, the couple moved to Iowa City, where he owned and operated Hawkeye Industries, a silk screening company, before moving to Grinnell in 1999. Alva was an active member of the American Legion, the Grinnell Elks Lodge, and the Grinnell Eagles Club. He was a talented artist and silk screener who enjoyed drawing wildlife scenes. His enjoyments included listening and dancing to Big Band music, fishing, hunting, camping, and was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Alva is survived by his wife Pauline Vincent of Grinnell; his daughters, Serita James of Newton, Madolyn (David) Massengale of Newton, Iowa, and Venisa (Dwight) Anderson of Searsboro; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; twelve great great grandchildren; and his sister, Evelyn Lewis of Forestville, Connecticut. Alva was preceded in death by his parents; his twin sons, Cary and Kevin Vincent; his daughter, Denisa Vincent; and his sister Pauline Smith.
