History of Morgan County, Ohio by Charles Robertson, M.D., on pages 527-528 in the chapter on Manchester Township, says the first settlement in the township was made by Charles Harwood and that Mr. Harwood moved from Washington County, Ohio, in 1806. Following his settlement were Samuel Sprague in Section 5 and Wm. Sherman in Section 8. Wm. Sherman erected the first sawmill on Dye's Fork of Meigs Creek. Because of the proximity of this William Sherman to Harwood and Sprague, it is highly probable that it is the correct William Sherman. The article later states that in an election held 3 Aug 1822, there were 45 voters, including William Sherman, Charles Harwood, Samuel Sprague and James Matheney.
"Early Ohioans' Residences from the Land Grant Records" by Mayburt Stephenson Riegel, lists under "Donation Tract Lands", lists Abel Sherman, Ezra Sherman and Josiah Sherman, all Olive Green, and John C. Showmanne, opposite Olive Green and Big Bottom, Meigs Creek.
Deed dated 7 Oct 1808 and recorded Vol 10 page 334, Washington Co.,OH. William Shouman of Township of Fearing, County of Washington, State of Ohio Yoeman for $125.00 paid by Saml C. Clark of Wood County Virginia, transferred: Part of Section 4 Twp 7 R 11 in the Ohio Company's purchase, beginning at a stake on the south boundary of Section No. as aforesaid which is 25 chains west of the post corner to the aforesaid section from which a white oak 12" diameter bears N 24 degrees east 15 links another white oak 12" diameter bears south 20 degrees west 16 links distant thence running north 40 chains to a post from which a white oak 18" diameter bears north 58 degrees east 24 links distant thence west 25 chains to a post from which a hickery 8" diameter bears north 80 degrees east 22 links distant thence south 40 chains to a post standing on the south boundary of Section as aforesaid from which a white oak 12" diameter bears south 80 degrees west 26 links distant from thence east 25 chains to point of beginning containing 100 acres.
Pension papers filed by Rebecca show that William served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Simon Beymer or Reymer's Company of Ohio Militia. The name is spelled both ways in different documents in the file, but is with a "B" on two and an "R" on one. [Note that other records show Beymer and it was based in Guernsey County. Out of the same county was a Captain Martin's Company, in which a James Sherman served as 2nd Lt. and two David DeLongs. Captain Beatty's Company had a James DeLong. The pension file also contains a certified copy of William and Rebecca's marriage, dated 22 Feb. 1873, that was obtained to prove her right to the widow's pension. A statement to establish Rebecca's identity was provided by Hannah Mathena and Martha Lawson.
"Ohio, The cross road of our nation, Records & Pioneer Families by Esther Powell, Vol 1 No. 1, lists soldiers of the War of 1812 for Guernsey County, Ohio. William Sherman is listed in Captain Beymer's Company, Note that in Captain Martin's Company was a James Sherman, 2nd Lt.
Deed dated 19 Apr 1813 and recorded Vol 12 page 117, Washington Co.,OH. William Shairman of Buffalow Township and Guernsey County, State of Ohio for $240.00, quitclaimed to Alvin Fuller of Waterford Township "all my share of privileges of the mill seat on Olive Greene Creek so called together with all my privileges which I am entitle to in the mills and mill yard which I hold by title of a deed (?) or lease from Aden Waterman". Witnessed by Eli Cogswell and Salmon Cogswell. Signed by William Shairman and notarized by Eli Cogswell, J.P.
"Washington County, Ohio, Tax List 1817 and Non-Resident Taxes 1801", by Carrie Eldridge, self-published, Chesapeake, OH. Lists in Roxbury,a parcel of land then owned by Sylvannus "Oleny", 100 acres, lot 11,S33 T5 R10, with the original proprietor John C. Shoeman. Note that William Sherman married Hannah Olney before Rebecca Delong. Also, Josiah Sherman is then owner of 100 acres, lot 3, S21 T5 R10 with original proprietor of Abra. Sherman. Appendix A in this book lists first settlers of Washington Co., OH, 07 Apr 1788 through 1790 and prior to the Indian War of 1792. On this list is a Shoeman (FR) fmly,1790. The FR presumably means French. Appendix C lists residents at the Indian War of 1792 and shows at Fort Harmar, "Monsieur Shouman (FR-wife (d), son." I believe that indicates a Frenchman whose wife is deceased, whose son resides with him. A history of the area says that John Conrad Shouman was French and that in 1795 he married Lucy Sherman, widow of Abel Sherman.

Had one page from probate (obtained from Anna Salierno via Ethel Brown), dated 16 Jun 1851. It lists heirs Rebecca Sherman, widow, 1/3.The others receive 1/7 each: Hannah Swanson, consort of John Swanson, daughter; Lucena Brown, consort of Elisha Brown, daughter; Isaac Sherman, son; Aaron Sherman, son; Mary Ann Sherman, daughter; Rachel Jane Sherman, daughter; Isaac McMurphy, only child of Lovina McMurphy a daughter now deceased. Obtained copies of appraisal and sale of personal estate, as well as copy of tax receipt showing property owned at death and receipt signed by widow. The page first mentioned was page 2 of the final report of the administrator. A complete copy of that report was obtained. Nothing in the file to show why daughter Rebecca was not named. Elizabeth was deceased at that time. Emery and William had signed releases as outlined above.
Real estate owned was:

17 June 2010 - I am entering Isaac and Hannah as parents, with all of the family information I can find from town records, in hopes I can find some other record that may indicate whether my William Sherman is the same. As of now, it is still only a theory. Need to find siblings of this William as well as Isaac's death or probate to try to establish relationships.
In addition, note that it is not proven that there was only one William Sherman in Washington-Morgan-Guernsey Counties, Ohio. Also, note that in 1817, Morgan County was formed, in part, from the Northwest part of Washington County - Waterford Twp. is in the NW part of what is now Washington County. Morgan was officially recognized in 1819, according to Animap. Morgan remained same size until 1850, when Noble was formed, taking part of Morgan. Guernsey Co. was formed in 1810 from Washington and Muskingum. Captain Beymer's Company in the War of 1812, from which William served, was a Guernsey County Company. The property that William Sherman purchased in Morgan County was, at various times, also in both Muskingum and Guernsey Counties.
