My great great great grandmother was Margaret Scrimshire, born in South Carolina about 1787. I do not know who her parents were but according to family history which was passed down for more than 100 years she had 3 brothers who married into the Cherokee Tribe. I will quote exactly what was written before 1900.
"Further in the letter in speaking about the Scrimshires, Aunt Nellie says; "Your grandmother Grace's (Margaret Scrimshire) three brothers, Englishmen, married into the Cherokee tribe. George Scrimshire's wife was a full blood: and a daughter of his married "Bushy Head", late chief of the Cherokees. I have met Col. Bandinot and Uncle John Cunningham, who were with the tribe prior to removal to Indian Territory. Our Cherokee kindred are fine people, intelligent, educated and christian. Your Uncle David Louis Grace, when a boy of 12 years, was sent to Potter's Mission in Alabama to study Cherokee so as to fit himself for interpreter."
If any of this fits with your information, please let me know.

I haven't looked at this line in a long time, and I find I do not have any
Nathaniels after all.

A David Grace was an orphan in 1791. He married a Miss Cross in Va. and had three children. He later married Margaret Scrimshire from Alabama and
settled on the Laurel River in Carter Co. Tn. He was a veteran of the War of
1812. He became involved with a John Ward and operated 3 forges.

They had these children:
Azariah (my ancestor) born about 1810
Ellen
Joseph H.
John
Lavina
Elizabeth
Rebecca
David Lewis II
George C.
Margaret
James

Joseph,
Have you found definite proof on who the father of your David Lewis Grace b. 1838 was? I believe he may have been the son of Azariah Grace, who was the eldest son of David Lewis Grace and Margaret Scrimshire. Contact me directly if you would like more information.

Amanda
David L. Grace was brother to my great great grandmother Lavina Grace. She was born in Tn in 1818 and married Elias Worley in 1837 in Johnson Co. Tn. Her parents were David Louis and Margaret Scrimshire Grace. When did David and family move to Illinois and what counties did they live in? Where were they in 1880? I would very much like to trade information with you.
