"I knew Lucy Ware intimately and corresponded with her. When she was about sixty or seventy years old her hair was cut short and was as white as snow. She was a perfect specimen of hospitality. She was very fine-looking; and has as fine a face as you ever saw, full of kindness and benevolence. She was rather fleshy, not too much so, and about the height of Lucy [Webb] Hayes..."
