"Mr. W. moved to Ky, 1789, engaged with Mr. Johnson, the Clerk of Jefferson County, Ky., writing in his office until he became fully acquainted with the work. In 1791 he returned to Va. Through the friendship of Gen. Daniel Morgan he obtained an introduction to Gen .Samuel Smith of Balto., Md., member, U.S. Congress, 1793-1833, by whose influence he was enabled to begin merchandizing in Louisville, Ky., where he laid the foundation of his large fortune, continuing in business for many years"
