He was educated in the common schools. He was clerk in the store of his uncle for two years, took a course of study at Delaware and in April 1861 he enlisted as a Union soldier for three month service, but his company was not mustered in service. He participated in the Morgan raid. He was a Mason, in the Blue Lodge, and a Republican.
He did not marry.
