Individual Details
Frances Isabel Gatchell
(14 Oct 1918 - 16 Oct 1987)
Frances came from a long line of "Gatchell's" who lived in the Tuscarawas Valley. After her mother died of tuberculosis when Frances was 2, her father, Job Workman Gatchell remarried. When Frances was 7, Job drowned in the Little Stillwater Creek after a very suspicious incident. He and two men were observed standing on the bridge, arguing, the day he was missing. One of the men "heard a splash". Job was found after dragging the creek for 3 days, drowned. One of the men were held for inquest, but the Coroner's report showed that Job drowned, and he was released. One newspaper article said that a bloody cap had been found, and another that he had a bump on his head. Family has passed down that Job was pushed into the creek after a heated argument. He was a good swimmer.
Frances was a devout Christian most of her life. She told the story of being concerned at one point in her life, that she may not truly be saved. She prayed for a sign from heaven to assure her of her salvation. Immediately, the song, "I'm a Child of the King" came to her mind. From that day forward, she knew that she truly was "A Child of the King."
Frances was raised by her father's niece and her husband, Pearl and Ted Warner near Bowerston, Ohio, after her father, Job died. The Warner's later had three children of their own, Theodore, Bob, and Grace Warner. They adopted Lanny Paul, later in life. Frances had a very sad childhood, the youngest of four children to Job and Zetta Gatchell. She lost her mother at age 2, and father at age 7 and she was separated from her siblings who were each raised by different families. They continued to be very close as adults.
After her husband, James "Roy" Roush died when she was 50, she learned to drive, and went to work at Twin City Hospital, things he had never permitted her to do before his death. Her suicide in 1987 came as a shock to everyone who knew and loved her, and was as lonely and tragic as her unhappy life. She had retired 9 months before her death, and became very depressed. Her mind gave way to thoughts that she could not care for herself, and that she had no money. She felt that her Jesus had left her, and when she took her life that cold October day, 2 days after her 69th. birthday, she lost out on many wonderful events that followed...the graduations and marriages of her grandchildren, and the births of 8 more great-grandchildren, Today, she is with "her Jesus", where she always wanted to be, and she is truly a Child of the King.
