Individual Details

John Jay PALMER

(13 Jan 1860 - 21 Nov 1934)

John Jay was a farmer in Elmwood Township. His 88.76 acres of land was part of the original land his father purchased under the Homestead Act. John Jay built a barn, many sheds, and 2 houses on this property. The original home was not torn down until between 1938 and 1940 when the new state highway, M-22, had begun construction ib about 1935. Because of the new highway, a second home was built opposite the driveway and is owned today by one of John Jay's direct decendants. Like his father, John Jay had learned the art of barrel making. Maud Karnisky was living with John and Anna as a hired girl (per U.S. Michigan Census of 1920). Maud was born in Michigan. Both her parents were born in Ohio(See Ref:R1610).
