Individual Details
Daniel PALMER Jr
(7 Nov 1833 - 6 Feb 1893)
He built the log house which used to stand just west of the west bay in Traverse City, MI. November 1, 1869, Daniel purchased 160 acres of land from the United States government through the Homestead Act of 1863 passed in May 1862. Homestead Certificate #160; Application #578; Recorded in Volume 1 Page 159. The sale document was signed by Ulysses S. Grant, President of the United States. The land was located in Section 4 & 5, Township 28 North, Range 11 West in Elmwood Township, Leelanau County, Michigan. Because of the vast numbers of maple trees on the land, Daniel purchased the property, built a log house and raised 8 children. In the 1870's he hired hands during the sap running season for $18 a month to help with the harvest. Being a cooper he handmade the wooden maple syrup buckets, many of which survive today. From this land, his decendants would begin the history of the family in Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties of Michigan. 1870 U.S. Census-Leelanau Co, MI, lists a Mary Ann Palmer as living in the Daniel Palmer houshold as a domestic servant. She was age 20 years old.
Daniel Palmer and Esther Weeks moved to Leelanau County about 1862, (per 1894 Leelanau Co, MI, Census Record) from Ashtabula County, Ohio. Cause of Death: Lung trouble Will #178 Leelanau Co, MI shows Daniel's death date as Feb 6, 1893 not Dec 1892 as listed State of MI, Leland, Lelanau Co Death Record, Vol 1&2, Rec 1560, pg 84. In 1966, Daniel's great grandson, Niles Palmer, purchased 6 acres of land of the original Palmer farm. His intentions were to remodel, restore, add a wing onto the home and eventually to move into it. Unfortunately it did not turn out to their plans and sold the land in 1972. The log house was finally torn down about 1975.
