Individual Details

Hans Jacob Landis

(1667 - Abt 1730)

Hans Jacob Landis came to America in 1717. He may have descended from Johannes "Hans" Landis who was beheaded in 1614 in Zurich. The ancestral link cannot be verified.

Hans Landis obtained a warrant to 150 acres in present-day West Lampeter Township on 27 September 1717.

Jay Weaver, James Strite, Ivan Leaman and Jane Best list Jacob Landis and Anna Witmer as the parents of Benjamin Landis, who married Anna Snavely. They also list Benjamin's siblings as Barbara Landis (1705-1782) and Anna Landis (1706-?).

In contrast, both books on Lancaster County list the Reverend Benjamin Landis (Senior) as the father of Benjamin Landis (Junior). Benjamin (Senior) had two brothers that came to America with him, Felix and John, as well as his son, Benjamin (Junior).

By whichever name all sources agree that Benjamin (Senior)/Jacob came to Pennsylvania from Switzerland or Manheim on the Rhine River on or before 1717. He was a Mennonite minister and farmed near Manheim in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
