Individual Details
Joseph Jacob Flory Senior
(Abt 1682 - Oct 1741)
Joseph Flory. Sr. changed the spelling of his surname from "Flory" to "Flora." Other spellings include "Flohr," "Florey," "Fleury," "Flori, " "Florin," "Fleure," "Florah," and "Floure."
Linda Thompson stated that Joseph Fleure was a Huguenot that left Fleure, France for the German Palatinate before coming to Philadelphia in 1733.
Joseph Flora came to Philadelphia in 1733 from the Palatinate region of Germany. Sailing on the ship Hope from Rotterdam. He took his oath of allegiance to England on 28 August 1733, the day of the ship's arrival, in the Philadelphia courthouse. Although Joseph was probably living in Germany before coming to America, he was listed as a Huguenot, and thus French, by Linda Thompson. Many Huguenots fled France for the German Palatinate in 1572 to avoid the massacre of protestants remembered as the Massacre of St. Bartholomew on 24 August 1572.
The trip from the Palatinate started by boat down the Rhine to Rotterdam. Then, they took a ship to Cowes on the Isle of Wright in England. After getting supplies, the ship headed for Philadelphia.
Ken Florey believes that Richard C. Davis has proven that Joseph Flory's wife's name was "Anna Maria Bugh." I have found Davis' research on my Newcomer ancestors to be only possibilities, and I have, therefore, not included Anna Maria Bugh as Joseph's wife, but note it here.
Of whichever nationality, he was a Dunker Brethren. He and his family settled in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
