Cadets from across Tulsa Public Schools gathered Tuesday night for the 18th-annual Superintendent's Review at the East Side Sport Complex.
TPS Superintendent Dr. Keith Ballard congratulated the cadets on the culmination of the 2011-2012 Junior ROTC program. He said the review is one of his favorite events of the school year.
"I look forward to the Superintendent's Review each year," Ballard said. "I'm very proud of the cadets for completing the program and showing the leadership and character that they do in and out of the classroom."
Ballard said about 1,200 students developed leadership skills this year through studies in citizenship, civics, character education, leadership principles and physical fitness. He thanked cadets for saluting veteran's on Veterans Day, honoring Martin Luther King on his day and for honoring fallen American's next month for Memorial Day.
Cadets this year have also shown exemplary service through mentoring, blood drives, fundraising efforts and other service projects.
"These may be called 'Service Projects' but I'm sure you would agree that it is an honor to participate in such worthy causes," Ballard said. "Thank you for representing Tulsa Public Schools."
He also thanked the parents, administrators, teachers, staff members and everyone else who attended the review for supporting the Junior ROTC cadets.
Nine cadets were specially recognized with the Superintendent's Award for Leadership. These students demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and citizenship over the course of the school year:
Brandon Thomas; Central High School
Juan Miramontes; East Central High School
Chandler Farris; Edison Preparatory High School
Michael McCollum; Hale High School
Clifford Wilson; Memorial High School
Darien Tilley; Will Rogers College High School
Huey Bowman; McLain High School for Science & Technology
Phoenix Cooper; Booker T. Washington High School
Jacob Farmer; Webster High School
After the review, Ballard apologized to everyone involved for malfunctioning sound equipment which prevented cadets and others in attendance from hearing what was being said.
"It's unfortunate not everyone could hear what was being said about the impressive young men and women standing out on the field," he said.
TPS has the Junior ROTC in high schools and Leadership Corps program in middle schools. Thousands of TPS middle and high school students have developed leadership skills through studies in citizenship, communication skills, character education and service to their community and school.
