Death
Mrs J. Folkers Called To Rest On Apr. SecondShe Had Been a Resident of Cass Township for Over Fifty Years.
Mrs. J. M. Folkers. for many years a resident of Cass township, died at the home of her sons, Thomas and John. April 2, following a short illness. The cause of her death was attributed to the infirmities of old age.
She was born at the town of Hessel, Ostfriesland, Germany, March 17, 1844. Early in her infancy, she was baptized, and was confirmed when 16 years of age. She was united in marriage to John H. Folkers in 1864. Her maiden name was Heiken. Mr. and Mrs. Folkers continued to live In Germany until 1876 when they decided to seek a new home in the United States. They first settled in Wayne township, but later made a permanent home in Cass township. This union was blessed with nine children, five daughters and four sons.
While yet residents of Germany, two daughters, Grace and Margaret, died in early childhood. Mr. and Mrs. Folkers were caused to mourn the death of the daughter Meta, who was Mrs. Albert Weers, in 1901. Their daughter Catherine died June 18, 1907, and one son, Frederick, died of pneumonia in England while serving In the United States army. Mr. Folkers died August 17, 1921.
The surviving children are: Henry, of Castle Grove township; George, Thomas and John Folkers, and Mrs. Anna Lubben of Cass township. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J. H. Heiken, thirteen grand- children and ten great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at St. Peter and Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church in Castle Grove township last Thursday, April 4, and burial was made in the cemetery near the church. Rev. G. Wolf, pastor of the church, had charge of the funeral. He took for his theme, Matt. 11:28-30, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."
