Death
Son of Jacob Lovejoy and his wife Sarah Townsend (both born in Maine). Loriston Hale Lovejoy married Clara Greenlief on January 5, 1849; they were the parents of five children. Loriston travelled west to California via Panama in 1853, later settling in northern El Dorado; he was joined by his wife and children who travelled to California some years later which was not unusual for 'the Gold Rush era'. Both Loriston and his wife Clara are buried in the old section of Rocklin Cemetery as are several of their children.[Placer Herald, Volume LVIII, Number 5, 2 October 1909]
DIED.
LOVEJOY—Near Cool, September 28,1909. Loriston Hale Lovejoy, a native of Maine, aged 91 years.
[Placer Herald, Volume LVIII, Number 5, 2 October 1909]
Loriston Hale Lovejoy.
One by one the pioneers of El Dorado county have answered the final call, until only one here and there scattered throughout the county are left of the grand, brave men and women who braved the trials of the long journey by land or sea, and endured the hardships and privations of the early days of California, to build up a new country and begin a new life far from home and kindred ties. Again the dark angel of death has taken another grand old pioneer. With the closing of the day on September 23d, Loriston Hale Lovejoy died at his home near Cool. The family Bible in his ancestral home at Sidney, Maine, records his birth: Born December 18,1817, Loriston Hale, third child of Jacob and Sarah Townsend Lovejoy.
On the 5th of January, 1849, he was united in marriage to Clara Greenleaf, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs Chase Page, of Brownville, Maine.
In 1853 Mr. Lovejoy took passage on the steamer Northern Light, coming to California by the way of the Isthmus. One year he spent in Redwood, in the lumber district, going to El dorado county in 1854. He mined, kept hotel, run stage lines, kept toll bridge, and every year became more attached to his adopted home. In 1862 his wife and two children came from the East, and he bought the property which has been the family home for the last forty-five years
Mr. Lovejoy had for almost fifty years been a member of the Masonic order. The Georgetown Lodge held the funeral services at the home in the morning and several members accompanied the remains to Rocklin, where the Rocklin Lodge assisted to conclude the burial services, and lay the body to rest.
His children were all at home, called several months before, when he was first stricken with a sudden sinking spell. He had attained the age of 91 years. He was a devoted husband and father, an honored citizen, and will long be remembered with kindly words by his neighbors.
He leaves to mourn their loss, a wife, three sons, two daughters: Thatcher T , of Newcastle, Amanda B., Fred S, of Rocklin; Steven F Lovejoy, of Cool, and Mrs. B. N. Newman, of Oakland; The grandchildren: H. B. Dobbs, Milton S. and Leslie L. Lovejoy, of Newcastle; A. L. Dobbas, of Auburn; Mrs Edward Layton, of Roseville; Chester, Alta, Arthur, Warren, Hazel and Andrew Lovejoy, of Rocklin; Melvin and Gertrude Newman, of Oakland, and Wesley Lovejoy, of Cool, a nephew, C. W. Lovejoy, of Rocklin, and six great grandchildren.
AN OLD-TIMER HAS LEFT US. (Mountain Democrat, October 16, 1909)
Another old-timer of El Dorado has gone, and left us a name to be remembered and honored. Loriston Hale Lovejoy was a native of Sidney, Maine, whence he came to this State via Panama, on the Steamer Northern Light, in 1853. After a year or so he came to Northern El Dorado, where he spent the rest of his life. He died at his home near Cool, where with a loving family around him, he died at the age of ninety-one. Few of the empire-builders have lived so blameless and useful a life. The old Lovejoy house, at the junction of the Auburn and Georgetown roads, was his home and place of business for many years. It was one of the most noted stations on the stage routes of that time. His home near Cool was later the lovable home of his family. January 5th, 1849, Mr. Lovejoy was married to Miss Clara Greenleaf at Brownsville, Maine. In 1862 his wife and two children came from the East, and he bought the family home in which he died. A wife, three sons, Thatcher T. of New Castle, Fred S. of Rocklin and Steven F. of Cool, and two daughters, Mrs. B. N. Newman and Amanda B. of Cool survive him. His grandchildren and great grandchildren number about fifteen or twenty well-known people. They are justly proud of their ancestor. The Georgetown and Rocklin Masonic Lodges participated in the honors paid to this patriarch of his Order
