SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY Notable Social Event In Life of Old Pioneer
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Lovejoy of Cool, celebrated the 60th anniversary of their wedding on January 5, 1909. Three sons and the two daughters and their families all came home to celebrate the day, A shower of 73 postals of congratulations were received, coming from Browsville, Maine, the Eastern home where the aged couple ware married in 1849, also from Bangor, Maine, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, Rocklin, Newcastle, Auburn, Gold field and Cool. Quite a number of the postals were hand-painted by friends, and verses written by them especially for the occasion. A sumptuous wedding dinner was prepared by Mrs. Steven Lovejoy. A beautiful bride’s cake in golden frosting, with dates and initials: “1849-1909, L. H. L . C. G. P.” in white, was the gift of the eldest daughter, Mrs. C. W. Lovejoy of Rocklin. The wedding cake was a large pound cake decorated in white, and was presented by the youngest daughter, Mrs. B, N. Newman of Oakland.
Mr. and Mrs, Lovejoy are old pioneers of El Dorado county. Mr. Lovejoy can claim the distinction of being the oldest man, exceping one, on the north side of the county. His is the only family of the old settlers ut the 50’s that remains unbroken. His children and grandchildren are all within a few hours travel of home. His family, including grandchildren and children-iu-law are 32 in number.
Mr. Lovejoy has lived 56 years in the State of California. For eight years he flumed the river at Stony Bar. In 1854 he bought out the stage line from Dr. Thomas, running from Geogetown to Sacramento. He built the famous big hotel called Penobscot, from which the Penobscot school district takes it name. He has been interested in stage lines with Hon. H. F. Page, later Congressman, and with Captain Lewis, and now at the age of 88, he still thinks El Dorado the one county of all California. Mr. Lovejoy is a Mason of forty-three years standing. Eight members of his family are members of the O. E. S., and five of the F. A. M. lodge.
Those present were as follows: Mr, and Mrs. L H. Lovejoy, Mr. and Mrs. Thatcher Lovejoy and sons M. S. and Leslie, of Newcastle, Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Lovejoy of Rocklin, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Lovejoy and sons Chester, Arthur, Warren. Andrew, and daughters Alta and Hazel, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Lovejoy and son Wessley, of Cool, Mr and Mrs, B. N. Newman and son Melvin and daughter Gertrude, of Oakland, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Dobbas and son Francis, of Newcastle, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Dobbas and daughters Elenor and Marcia, and son Dorhnian, of Auburn, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Esper and son Leland, of Cool, Mr. and Mrs. George Keema of Yerrington, Nevada.
