Individual Details

Jacob Prouty Jr.

(11 Apr 1752 - 28 Feb 1831)

Jacob Prouty was born in Spencer, Massachusetts in 1752. When he was 22 he married Rachel Eddy. At first the couple remained in Spencer where their first two sons were born. His father's will written in 1781 promised the real estate to the two youngest sons, Joshua & Nathan. Jacob and his other brothers were each bequeathed Sixty Spanish milled Dollars, or value thereof.
Jacob and Rachel decided to leave Spencer and develop their own residence elsewhere. Land records which appear to show this Jacob Prouty, show him buying property in various places and his struggle to establish himself. "Jacob Proute of Spencer, husbandman", bought a farm in Pelham [New York], 95 acres, April 11, 1780. "Jacob Prouty of Brookfield" lost 65 acres of this farm in Pelham in a lawsuit April 16, 1783. "Jacob Prout of Longmeadow yeoman" bought 71 acres in Longmeadow, April 6, 1784. "Jacob Prouty of Windsor, Conn., yeoman," sold land in Pelham, September 25, 1784. He seems to be the Jacob Prouty who removed to Westmoreland, New Hampshire, and later to Janesville, New York. (Pope, 35). [Janesville is now called Granville.]
The family finally settled in Washington County, New York. The 1800 census shows a Jacob Prouty in Crown Point and the 1803 Granville tax list shows both Jacob and his son Abijah. Jacob and Rachel lived the rest of their lives in Granville on their farm, Jacob dying in 1831 and Rachel in 1833. [His wife Rachel died June 10, 1831] Both were buried on their farm in the Prouty Cemetery, and their graves are marked with nice tombstones. They had several children some of whom were named Abijah, Squire (our ancestor), James Lycurgus, Lovi and others." (Aline Vaughn and Richard South) Their son Abijah stayed in Granville, raising a large family and farming until his death in 1853.
