Individual Details

Squire Adolphus Prouty

(10 Jan 1777 - 10 Jan 1854)

Squire was born on Jan. 10, 1777 in Spencer, Massachusetts to Jacob and Rachel (Eddy) Prouty. His parents moved several times while he was young, finally settling on a farm in Granville, New York. Growing up, Squire learned blacksmithing and became skilled in that trade. In 1796 nineteen year old Squire married Cynthia Diantha Howe, the eldest daughter of Peter and Submit (Fuller) Howe in Poultney, Rutland Co., Vermont. Poultney is about ten miles NE of Granville, and was the home of the Howes. The young couple might have had children while living in Poultney, but if so, it is thought they did not survive.
When his father-in-law Peter Howe formed a party to move to Ohio in 1801, Squire and Diantha decided to go with them. The group traveled by covered wagon for about two months before reaching Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio, on Nov. 12, 1801. Peter Howe and most of the group settled near Marietta. After staying a short time in the old block house (which was still standing in Marietta in 1929), Squire went up the Muskingum River about 8 miles and built a log cabin for his family about a quarter of a mile south of Devol's Dam. He also built a blacksmith shop to practice his trade and farmed. He and Diantha had four children, Rachel, Louisa Ann, Squire Adolphus, and our ancestor Richard Austin, all born at Devol's Dam near Marietta, Ohio, in Washington Co on the north side of the river in Union Township.
Squire probably fought in the War of 1812, as Squire's son Austin wrote in a letter to his son James William Prouty during the Civil War "... your grandfather Prouty fought in the last war with England to maintain our independence..."
In 1830 they moved to Joy, Athens Co., Ohio (Joy is now in Morgan Co., Ohio). Letters written in 1848 to their son Adolphus (see notes under Squire Adolphus) show that Squire and Dianthy were living in Hancock Co., Ohio. In the letters, they wanted to know where Adolphus was planning on settling and whether he was going to have them live with him. When Adolphus moved to Iowa, they remained in Ohio to live near their daughter Louisa's family. 1850 census records show them living in Hancock Co., Delaware Township in-between the families of Job and Louisa (Prouty) Phillips and David and Hannah Phillips. Later they went to live with their daughter Louisa Ann (Prouty) Phillips at Forest, Hardin County, Ohio. They lived there until their deaths, his on Jan 10,1854, and Cynthia's on Jan. 3, 1862. Squire and Cynthia are buried about two miles west of Forest, Ohio in Huston Cemetery in the Phillip plot with their daughter's family and have nice tombstones marking their graves.

Certain dates vary with which genealogy you read; Howe's, Alderman's or Prouty's by Pope. Information taken from family records, Alderman's in America, pgs. 495-496, Howe genealogy pgs. 148-150, and LDS records. In Howe genealogy they state that Squire and Cynthia had 3 children that was born in Vermont, two of which died. Both Alderman's in America and the Howe genealogy state that they went to Ohio in 1801 but LDS records state the birth of Rachel in 1802 in Vermont. Also the Alderman's in America states their wedding date as 1801. The place of birth also varies with different data, one being Poultney, Rutland Co., Vermont.
