Individual Details

George Washington Flanders

(Abt 1795 - Bef 1860)

George Washington Flanders was born 1795, NY. The 1850 Census Record of Hardin Co., KY says his birthplace is PA. However, the Larue County History says he is from NY. Since all of his brothers and sisters are from NY, and since the family was in NY prior to their removal to KY, and owned land in NY, the assumption is that he is from NY. George Washington Flanders died after 1851 and before 1860, as he does not appear on the census with his wife in 1860. There are many deeds and transactions in Hardin and Larue Co., KY by George, his father, and brothers. 1838 George Washington Flanders deeded land to Edward Upton, Book R, f(olio) 397. In 1837 he deeded land to his father Jacob Flanders, Book R f 141. Jacob Flanders deeded land to George in 1837, Book R f 141. He is listed many times as witness to his siblings' marriages and of posting bond for the same purpose for them. He was a very well thought of person and is listed in the History of Larue County, KY. George and Asenath were married in Ontario Co., NY. Asenath was married to a (___) Albert prior to her marriage to George Washington Flanders. She is listed in the 1810 Census as the Widow Albert, in NY, NY Co., NY. She is known to have had two children by Mr. Albert. It is probable that they were married in NY city. George and his wife may be buried in NY because she and her family were from NY. Additionally, George and his family had relatives in Ontario and Chatauqua Co's, NY. A complete list of all the children by George Washington Flanders is also unknown. The ones listed have been verified by census records, marriage records, or by birth records. The place and deaths have been coputed by census records and only give a range of years, based on the last entries of the census, tax rolls, Flanders family records, and other court records of this family. He was alleged to be a War of 1812 Veteran, which has not been verified to date. One thing is certain, an examination of all the mentioned records indicate that he was the leader of the family prior to his father's death, even more so, than his brothers, Benjamin and Elisha.
