Individual Details

Engeline Margaretha "Engel" Grumm

(13 Aug 1841 - 15 Dec 1935)

She was adopted by the Grums.
She reported in a birthday celebration in August of 1932 (August 18, 1932 Monticello Express) that 72 relatives were in the group of passengers who were bound for America. The trip, exceedingly long even for the standards of the day, took six weeks and four days. They sprang a leak in the ship when out on the open sea, probably requiring them to drop sails so not to stress the hull and make the leak worse.

Angeline came to the US when she was 15 with a group of 72 relatives in the spring of 1857. They all settled near Dixon, Illinois. She lived there for five years before coming to Jones Co., Iowa where a sister, Mrs. Arend Zimmerman, was living in Wayne Township.

Angeline Jacobs Hanken, 91
For more than seventy years, Mrs. A. H. Hanken of Scotch Grove has been a resident of Jones county, with the exception of visits to relatives in Canada and two and a half years spent in Long Beach, Calif., with her daughter, Mrs. L. Anne Becker. She will celebrate her ninety-second birthday next month.
Born in the province of Hanover in Germany, in the village of Wiederfehn, Ostfriesland, on August 13, 1841, Angeline Margaret Grumm attended the village school during the years before the family came to America. Her parents were Richard and Anke Marguerita Heeren Grumm, and her father was a farmer in the province. In the spring of 1857, when Angeline was 15 years old, she and her family, with 72 relatives from her own community, sailed for America in a small sailing vessel which took six weeks and four days to make the trip, including a bad three-day storm.
The whole group settled around Dixon, Ill., where Angeline's father died in October, 1857, and her mother in August, 1859. Four years after arrival in Dixon, the 19-year old girl came to Wayne township, Jones county, a place suggested by the fact that her sister, Mrs. Arend Zimmerman, deceased, was already settled there.
On August 12, 1861, Angeline Grumm became the bride of Henry J. Jacobs at Anamosa, and the couple made a home for their family for the next 30 years on the old Jacobs place now occupied by Carl Plueger. On February 22, 1892, Mr. Jacobs died, and Mrs. Jacobs ran the farm for the next four years with the help of her sons.
Mrs. Jacobs married A. H. Hanken of Monticello on August 10, 1895, and after 1896 made her home in Monticello for 15 years. Mr. Hanken died in September, 1902, seven years after their marriage. During the past six years, Mrs. Hanken has made her home with her son, Paul A. Jacobs of Scotch Grove.
Mrs. Hanken became the mother of 10 children, five boys and five girls, two of whom are deceased. Lawrence died at the age of nine years, and Mrs. C. H. Rastede passed away several years ago. She also has 24 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Her children are: Mrs. J. G. Thomas, Monticello; the Rev. H. E. Jacobs, Pleasant Plains, Ill; Mrs. A. E. Guenter, Denver, Colo.; C. C. Jacobs, Fergus Falls, Minn.; L. R. Jacobs, Emmetsburg; Mrs. E. W. Weber and Mrs. L. Anne Becker, both of Long Beach, Calif.; and Paul A. Jacobs, Monticello.
