Mrs. A. Hanken Died at Age Of 94 Yrs., Dec. 15

She Had Suffered Stroke On December 8 Which Caused Her Death

Mrs. Angeline Margaret Hanken, who was perhaps one of the oldest women living in Monticello and vicinity, passed away at the home of her son, Paul Jacobs, last Sunday evening at 9:05. Mrs. Hanken had sustained a stroke of paralysis a week previous to her death. Her condition gradually became worse until she answered the final summons.
The birth of Mrs. Hanken occurred in the village of Wiesederfehn, Ostfriesland, Germany. August 13, 1841. She was therefore in her ninety-fifth year. She was a daughter of the late Richard and Anke Marguerita Heeren Steinbach. Her father was a farmer, and she attended the village school at Wiesederfehn. She later was confirmed i the Lutheran church, and at the age of 15 years emigrated to the United States.

Came in Spring of 1857.

When this young woman came to the United States it was necessary for her to come on a sailing vessel. There were no steamboats in those days, and it took six weeks and four days to make the trip across the ocean. The passengers on the boat experienced a three day storm, during which time the boat sprang a leak, and it was some time before it was repaired and the ship could proceed.
Mrs. Hanken came to this country with a group of 72 relatives, all of whom settled near Dixon, Ill. She lived there for five years before coming to Jones county. Her parents passed away within a few years after settling in Illinois. Mrs. Hanken had a sister, Mrs. Arend Zimmerman, living in Wayne township, and it was this fact that brought her to Jones country.

Married in 1861

On August 12, 1861, the marriage of Henry J. Jacobs and Angeline M. Steinbach occurred. There were no regular Lutheran ministers in Jones county in that early day, and the marriage was therefore performed at the home of Mr. Jacobs' parents, by Joseph Gott, a justice of the peace. Their home was made for over thirty years on a farm now occupied by Carl Plueger. Mr. Jacobs died February 22, 1892. During the next four years Mrs. Jacobs conducted the farm work with the assistance of her sons, and thereafter removed to Monticello, in 1895.
She was married a second time to Henry Hanken, December 10, 1895. Mr. Hanken died in September, 1902. Mrs. Hanken lived in Monticello for fifteen years, and thereafter lived in the home of her son Paul during the past nine years.

Mother of 10 Children

Mrs. Hanken was the mother of ten children, Mrs. J. G. Thomas of Monticello, Rev. H. E. Jacobs now deceased. Mrs. A. E. Guenther of Denver, Colo., C. C. Jacobs of Fergus Falls, Minn., L. R. Jacobs of Emmetsburg, Mrs. E. M. Weber and Mrs. L. Anne Becker of Long Beach, Cal., Mrs. Gera Rastede now deceased, Lawrence who died in childhood, and Paul A. Jacobs of Monticello. She is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, and by two great great grandchildren.
At the time of her death Mrs. Hanken was the only living charter member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, which is located three miles southeast of Monticello. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jacobs, and thereafter at St. John's church, with burial in the cemetery adjoining the church. Rev. Paul T. Gutknecht had charge of the services. The children attending the funeral from a distance included her son L. R. Jacobs of Emmetsburg. Her daughter, Mrs. Guenther, had only recently visited with her mother, and was at her bedside when she sustained the stroke. She was forced to return home.
