Arend Heinrich "Henry" Hanken

Arend Heinrich Hanken was born at Wiesede, Germany 25 September 1831, He died in 1901 and is buried at St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery in Wayne Township Jones county, Iowa. His first Wife, Johanna Heeren, was born 19 October 1837 and died 22 June 1881, They were married 6 April, 1856 in Dixon, Illinois. Johanna Heeren immigrated to America in the fall of 1855. After they were married the family moved to Lovell Township Jones County, Iowa in the spring of 1859. By that time brothers Wessel Behren Hanken with his wife Talke Margarethe (Heyen) Hanken, Johann Behren Hanken and parents Nannie and Talke Margarethe(Ocken) Hanken, had joined them. The rest of the family had sailed on the ship Hermine and arrived in America June 23, 1858. Prior to leaving Dixon, Illinois, they had all lived together on a rented place known then as the Morels farm. Arend/Ahrend often does not use his first name, as was the custom in Germany as your first name is considered a baptism name that belongs to someone in the family who is being honored by this baptism name. Usually the middle name is the one you are known by and in Arend's case, he is often called Henry Hanken. Because of similar names happen within families ( German custom from the area they came from said the first son and first daughter were named after the fathers parents, the secon son and second daughter were named after the mothers parents) often you will find it confusing as to the person you are searching for (Steve Hanken).

Death

Mr. Henry Hanken died at his home east of Monticello, yesterday morning at 2:30 o'clock. He suffered a stroke of paralysis last Thursday, and gradually failed, without regaining speech, until death came. The funeral services will be held at the Lutheran church, in his neighborhood, and of which he was a member, tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, at one o'clock. Mr. Hanken had resided in this neighborhood more than forty years -- if we mistake not he came here in 1859. He was an upright man, unassuming, kind hearted, honest and God fearing. He was the father of a large family, and took pardonable pride in the fact that they all assumed respectable positions in life. Mr. Hanken was born at Wieseda, Province Hanover, Germany. He came to the United States when a young man with his parents, and after spending a short while in Illinois, settled in the neighborhood of Monticello. His wife died many years ago, and in 1895 he married the widow of the late Henry Jacobs, who survives. Following are the names of Mr. Hanken's children: Mrs. Mary Rieken, Henry Hanken, Lena Hanken and Herman Hanken, all of this county; John Hanken, Mrs. Max Stadtmueller, Nannie Hanken, Mrs. Meta Hinrichs and Mrs. Johanna Rickels, of Pomeroy. One daughter, Matilda, who became the wife of Mr. Leonard Wismeyer, died a few years ago. Mr. Hanken was nearly 70 years old.
