Individual Details

Charles Warren Lovejoy

(18 Apr 1865 - 14 Oct 1929)

Charles, the middle son, drove a team and freight wagon for the mill community, bringing supplies from the Sacramento Valley which sometimes included dynamite. One of the stories handed down in the family was for the time Uncle Charley was hauling dynamite and sulfur and happened to look back to see smoke curling up. Whipping up the horses he drove pell-mell over the rocky mountain road to the Eel River which he knew was only a short distance ahead, and drove the wagon into the river just in time to put out the fire. It ruined his load, of course, but saved the wagon and team, and his own life.
Charles did not join the family when they moved into the house by Fox Creek, but headed north and eventually settled in El Dorado County.
