Johann Jansen "John" Jacobs

John Jacobs, farmer and cattle-buyer; P.O. Monticello; born in Germany in 1838; came to America in 1854, and to Jones Co. in the fall of 1859. Mr. Jacobs had been married twice; maiden name of first wife was Matilda Miller, a native of Philadelphia; they were married in Illinois June 16, 1859; wife died on Dec. 11, 1864; they had three children, all living, named H. R. Annie, Barbara and Angert Barnhardt. Maiden name of second wife was Annie Grumm, a native of Germany; they were married on the 26th of March, 1868; have four children, named Matilda, Willie, Mary and Sophia Joanna. Mr. Jacobs owns over one thousand acres of land, as follows: 818 in Wayne, 90 in Scotch Grove, 50 in Richland, and 52 1/2 in Monticello Townships. He lives on Sec. 13, Wayne Township. He is one of the School Directors in his district. He and his family are Lutherans; he is a Republican.

Would Soon Have Passed His Ninety-Third Birth Anniversary.
John Jacobs, one of the early settlers of Jones county and for many years a resident of Monticello, died at his home in Santa Ana, California. September 16, 1929, at the age of nearly ninety-two and a half years.
Mr. Jacobs was born in the province of Hanover, Germany, April 11, 1837. In company with his brother Henry, he came to America at the age of fifteen years, on a sailing vessel bound for New Orleans. They were three months on the journey. Thence they went by steamer up the Mississippi river. He and his brother spent one winter in the lumber regions of Michigan, where they worked for $4 per month. Thence they went to Dixon, Illinois, where Mr. Jacobs was married to Matilda Miller, a school mate, living in the Dixon vicinity.
John Jacobs and his wife, in company with Henry Jacobs, came to Jones county in the fall of 1859. They bought land in Wayne township, but took up their residence in Scotch Grove township, where they lived a year, and then removed to Wayne. Mr. Jacobs' oldest son. Henry R. Jacobs, present assessor of Monticello, was born while they lived in Scotch Grove township.
Mrs. Jacobs, the first wife of John Jacobs, died in 1863, leaving three children, who are: Henry R. Jacobs of this city, Anna B. Moore of Kenwood Park, and August B. Jacobs of Monticello. There are fourteen grandchildren, the children of the above named three.
John Jacobs was married the second time, March 22, 1868, to Anna Grumm. The children of that marriage are: Marie, William, Sophia. Margaret, Louise, Emma, Julia. Pauline, Frederick, John and Otto, all of whom are married except Julia. All of Mr. Jacobs children are living.
Mr Jacobs bought a farm at Langworthy in 1882, and after living there several years, purchased in Monticello the home now owned by Mrs. H. S. Richardson, where he lived several years. Thence he went to Waterloo, where he lived several years and thence to California, more than ten years ago. His second wife died a few years ago. Mr Jacobs maintained his home until the last. He was the last of the original founders of St. John's Lutheran church of Wayne township, popularly known as the Sand Hill church. Mr. Jacobs was a very active and aggressive business man. He was a farmer and also interested in the purchase and sale of live stock.
