Express Presents Eibo F. Eiben As Next Fifty Year Farmer in Monticello

"I started my career as a farmer when I was a small boy of eleven or twelve years of age; operating a walking corn plow," declared Eibo Frederick Eiben, the next member of the fifty-year farmers club sponsored by the Monticello Express. Mr. Eiben and his good wife retired from active farm work in 1935 and now are comfortably situated in their home on North Sycamore street
Mr. Eiben, a son of Gerhard Eiben and Christine Von Besten Eiben, was born in the town of Phoenix, Ostfriesland, Germany, July 27, 1872. When he was a lad of two years he emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1875 and settled in Wayne township.
Rural Schooling
After living in Wayne township for a time, the family removed to Lovell township where Mr. Eiben grew to manhood and attended the rural schools in Jones county. His marriage to Johanna G. Fehners occurred April 6, 1899 at SS Peter and Paul's Lutheran church in Castle Grove township. The marriage service was read by Rev. Hugo Lutz. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Eiben lived for ten years on the A. Danks farm in Castle Grove township and in 1909 purchased their home place located five miles west of Monticello.
Their son, Ben Eiben, now operates the home farm in Castle Grove township. Mr. and Mrs. Eiben lived on this farm for 26 years.
They are the parents of nine children, viz.: Fannie, Mrs. Alva Stadtmueller, now deceased; John of Independence; Gerd of Cedar Rapids; Ben of Castle Grove town- hip; Mary, Mrs. Carl Jacobi, Cairo, Ill.; Augusta, Mrs. Ryland Crary, Iowa City; Miss Emma Eiben, R. N., Sheboygan, Wis. Louise, Mrs. Herman Egger, Sand Spring; and Carl, a student at Wartburg college, Waverly. Mr Eiben also has ten grandchildren.
There were fourteen members of Mr. Eiben's family, two of whom died in Germany before the family came to America and two died after settling here. The other brothers and sisters include: Chris, Mrs. I. A. Heiken, Mrs. John Heiken, and Mrs. John Smith of Monticello; Cornelius Eiben of Wymore, Neb.; Will and Henry of Prairieburg, and Mrs. William Martens of Dundee.
Mr. Eiben served as school director, township trustee and township assessor during the time they lived in Castle Grove township. He also has been an adjuster for the Farmers Mutual Insurance association of Castle Grove. During the major portion of his life he has voted the democratic ticket but whenever he was interested in a candidate of some other party he never hesitated to switch over. He does not like the lend-lease bill recently passed by congress but is of the firm opinion that he is willing to try this method if it will only stop the arrogant progress of the dictators of continental Europe. He does not agree that such men have the right to destroy small countries that have been successful and made progress in the past. Mr. Eiben suggests that we in America are used to doing things our own way and he would not care to change places with the people of his native land and be ruled in the manner in which they are at present.
