Gottlieb Johannes "John G." Eiben

(15 Nov 1885 - 11 Sep 1964)

(Monticello Express, Sept 2, 1909)
John Eiben has lost a good hunting dog, and as the dog once came home after an absence of several days with a collar on his neck, he fears that some one may have the canine tied up. The dog is a white fox hound with a few black spots on the body and some tan in the face. Mr. Eiben will be glad to be put in the way of locating his dog.

... John Eiben goes to the farm south of Prairieburg that he purchased, last fall , .... These people have all been good citizens and Castle Grove is sorry to lose them but wishes them success. (Mar 2, 1911)

(Monticello Express, Apr 28, 1921)
G. J. Eiben, the proprietor of the Hilltop farm between Anamosa and Prairieburg, recently killed an old gray wolf on the edge of Delaware county and secured 7 cubs. In his hunt he saw two more old wolves, which he got a shot at at long range. Two weeks previously, he succeeded in catching an old gray wolf after a race of a mile and a half. He had with him two grayhounds, one of which took the lead, and ran the wolves down. The other grayhound he took in his vehicle and followed them. He found the pursuing grayhound in a fight with the wolf. The dog was badly cut up, but the two dogs soon finished the old wolf. Eiben is something of a wolf hunter, for three weeks ago in this county, his hound, with the help of a little fox hound, killed another old wolf.

(1932)
John Eiben was a share renter from Col. C. B. Robbins of 1,100 acres three miles north of Viola. He lived in a huge house bought by Robbins from Gus Matsell in 1926. The house had been built by Gus's father George W. Matsell, a former New York chief of police, more than 75 years ago. It had twenty rooms including a wine cellar, five fireplaces and a separate section for servants. John had lived there for two years when he was interviewed July 30, 1932. He was raising 105 head of Scotch Shorthorns, 100 head of Shropshire sheep, had 15 horses and 400 acres of plowland. He gives his opinion on the new T.B. test, hunting, prohibition, the depression and how he uses a car but not a tractor. John in 1932 had two boys and four girls.
