Burlingame Herald (Burlingame, Kansas) Thu, Nov 3, 1881, Page 3
Miss Lottie Guizlo has recently returned from Kansas City, where she has had an operation performed on one of her eyes, the same having been turned or crossed from her birth. We called to see Miss Lottie since her return, and so far as we are able to judge think the operation has been a successful one. She tells us that it was done by Dr. Fryer, of the firm of Fryer & Tyree, and that the length of time required for the same was about twenty minutes. She also says that instead of being very painful, as one would naturally suppose, she suffered but very little. Dr. Fryer is a Post Surgeon at Fort Leavenworth, but makes stated visits to Kansas City. The term cross-eyed, which is applied to eyes that are affected in this way, is a very natural one. The eye, or eyes - as the case may be - instead of being straight, and thus natural, are turned inward, and the rays of light in passing to the eyes cross each other. Hence the term cross-eyed. The operation for relief in cases of this kind is a very delicate one. The inside cords are partially cut, and if properly done the eyeball will, in time, assume the natural position; but if, as is often the case, the operation is performed by some one who does not thoroughly understand his business, the eye is left in a much worse condition than formerly.
